Carlos Castellanos Awarded Research Fellowship at Colombian University

Carlos Castellanos, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art’s Digital/Experimental Media Program has been awarded a Research Design + Creation Fellowship at the Universidad de Caldas in Manizales, Colombia as part of the 23rd International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2017).

The research will focus on the use of sound to investigate the bioelectric and behavioral patterns of microorganisms. Castellanos will take up residency at the university and will work with students to design and build a hybrid biological-electronic system wherein variations in electrical potential from an array of microbial fuel cells are translated into rhythmic, amplitude and frequency modulations in modular electronic and software-based sound synthesizers. The research combine renewable energy technology, machine learning, sound and and public engagement and will culminate in a public demonstration and exhibition/performance during the week of the festival (June 11-18).

This month’s event will feature special guest speaker Philippe Pasquier. Dr. Pasquier is an associate professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Simon Fraser University. He conducts both a scientific and artistic research agenda. His research focuses on building deeper theories for endowing machines with autonomous behaviours, with a focus on creative and artistic applications.

DX Media Student Presents at Undergraduate Research Day at the Capital

Patricia Melton of the Department of Art’s Digital/Experimental Media program recently presented her work at the Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the capital in Topeka on February 15th. Patricia project “The Cicada: Interactive Art Promoting Healthier Human-Insect Relationships” is an exploration of alternative modes of interaction with living organisms. The interactive Cicada invites the participant to interact by applying pressure and responding by triggering sound, images and video. Only 5 K-State students were selected by the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry for this prestigious event. Congratulations, Patricia!

Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Digital/Experimental Media

The Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (SUROP) at Kansas State University (KSU) gives undergraduates from under-represented groups a first-hand experience with the research process. This experience is designed to help students prepare for graduate school and other advanced study.

DX Media faculty member Carlos Castellanos will be participating with Professor William Hsu from Computer Science to co-mentor a student with computer science or engineering background or an technologically inclined new media artist on an interdisciplinary project.

The Digital/Experimental (DX) Media Lab at Kansas State University is now accepting applications for its MFA in Digital/Experimental Media.

The DX Media program is an interdisciplinary academic and research program dedicated to exploring the intersections of art, science, technology and society and the experimental application of a wide range of media as art.

The MFA program in Digital/Experimental Media emphasizes cultural production that is informed by historical, philosophical and theoretical study. Students are encouraged to draw from areas outside of traditional art domains and encouraged to question and challenge traditional notions of what constitute valid art media, contexts, and approaches. The program encourages an interdisciplinary lens when creating digital and experimental works, allowing students to explore the blurred lines between art, science, culture, and history. Desired focus areas include (but are not limited to): mapping, imaging, information visualization, ecological and biological practice, social and community practice, electronics and physical computing, interactivity, telecommunications, network art, systems art and sound art. As part of Kansas State University’s 2025 initiative, the goal of our emerging program is to be a renown center for creativity, research and practice in cutting edge experimental art and technology.

The MFA is a 3 year program of study involving seminars, studio courses, art history courses, and independent study. Student progress is monitored through a series of open faculty reviews and exhibition of works. A final exhibition at either the department’s Mark A. Chapman Gallery or another approved location is required. Students are encouraged to take courses outside of the Department of Art as may be appropriate to their research and development.

In addition to guidance in the development of a cohesive, culminating body of work, the program offers mentorship in the instruction of art for students interested in university teaching. Graduate students receive Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) their first year, with 100% tuition waiver and stipend for full-time appointments. GTAs assist a professor and are assigned to teach courses related to their areas as Instructor of Record. K-state MFA students graduate with strong teaching portfolios and samples of student work.

The DX Media program offers a variety programming involving exhibitions, symposia and visiting artists which compliment the MFA program. We are the hosts of the first “prairie LASER”, K-State’s chapter of the Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous. DX Media graduate students will be important participants in the development and administration of the K-State LASER program.

The DX Media Lab is currently in the developmental stages of research initiatives with other academic units across the university which will provide opportunities for students to participate in transdisciplinary collaborations, publish scholarly texts, develop curatorial projects, receive funding and exhibit their work to a national and international audience. The DX Media Lab will serve as a platform for graduate students to emerge as writers, scholars and curators, as well as conceptually and technically adept artists.

The program seeks students with interests and explorations in emerging technologies and critical analyses of the relationship of science, technology, culture and history. Students with undergraduate majors outside of art are welcome as long as evidence of relevant accomplishment and clear direction are provided.

The DX Media program is located in the Department of Art at Kansas State University, a public research institution in Manhattan, KS. With its historic roots as a land grant university, Kansas State University has long been a leader in agriculture-based science and engineering research. Located within the Flint Hills, the largest remaining area of unplowed tallgrass prairie in North America, K-State is also known for its ecological research on the plants and animals of the Great Plains. The work of K-State’s Konza Prairie Biological Research Station and the recently established Nanotechnology Innovation Center (and its research focus on sustainable agriculture-based nanomaterials) are just two examples of the dynamic and innovative academic culture of the university.

DX Media Professor Deploys Floating Wetland in Lake in Wuhan, China

Assistant Professor Carlos Castellanos of the DX Media program in the Kansas State University Art Department recently deployed a prototype for a “Floating Data Wetland” in Wuhan, China. Done in collaboration students and members of the local community ,this is a floating island housing sensors and lights, along with native plants and grasses. The system measures water quality and in turn changes the color of the lights (red = bad water quality, blue = good). In addition, anyone with an Internet connection or mobile device can receive real-time information from the floating wetland, as the data is shared openly online. The vision is for the project is to create a network of these data wetlands across the city, in its plentiful lakes and rivers. Participants could also register to receive updates on this data and identify stations near them in need of care, in essence “adopting” these wetland systems. The light and sound produced by the wetlands would serve as indicators of species activity, water quality and collective human interest in the environment. The floating wetlands themselves may also improve the overall water quality of the lake or river where they are deployed (as well as providing shade for the fish, which is typically beneficial).

The piece premiered on May 20 at the K11 Art Mall in Hong Kong as part of the 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2016HK) and was exhibited until July 4th.

Floating Data Wetland

Castellanos was in residency at the K11 art village, located in Wuhan, China as part of the K11 Art Foundation x FUSE ISEA2016HK Residency Program, an initiative formed by KAF and Videotage as part of the 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2016HK). The residency offers a multi-disciplinary platform for artists to realize their ideas by creating media artworks from a wide spectrum of knowledge. In alignment with KAF’s mission, the program will drive and facilitate cultural exchange, creating a new platform for cross-border dialogue. Taking advantage of the abundance of lakes, rivers and wetlands in Wuhan, Castellanos’s residency’s project seeks to foster awareness and greater community agency and autonomy over issues of ecological stewardship and environmental health and resilience.

The International Symposium on Electronic Art was initiated in 1988 in order to support the founding and maintenance of an international network of organizations and individuals active in the field of the electronic arts. This internationally recognized electronic art event will be held in Hong Kong for the first time.

Matt Garcia Awarded Creative Capital Grant

DX Media Lab co-director Matt Garcia has been awarded a Creative Capital Grant. Garcia and fellow K-State faculty member April Bojorquez (collective known s DesertArtLab) have received the prestigious Creative Capital Award to expand their work examining relationships between art, ecology and society specifically dealing with growing dryland zones. The Creative Capital Award is one of the top honors in contemporary art.
